Chairman’s Planning Guide Project: Tour of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Temple PLANNING 1. PRIMARY PURPOSE. (WHAT IS THE ONE REASON YOU WANT TO SUCCESSFULLY RUN THIS PROJECT?) The primary purpose of this project is to have members learn a little bit about the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints religion and beliefs. 2. (EXAMPLE: TO INVOLVE 25 JAYCEES.) The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormans) have just completed construction of a new temple. Before the temple is closed to non-Mormans, they offer free tours to anyone who is interested. We will take the tour and hopefully learn a little bit about their religion. This project will assist in attaining the goal “To conduct at least 2 Spiritual Development projects” in the Life Improvement Pinnacle Area/CPG Category, under the Individual Development Area, as outlined in the 1997-1998 Chapter Planning Guide for the West St. Louis County Jaycees. I provided them with the number to call for ticket reservations, and they made plans to go on the tour on a different date. 9. WHAT CHANGES OR RECOMMENDATIONS DO YOU HAVE FOR A FUTURE CHAIRMAN? This is a rare Spiritual Development project, because the Mormans build few temples, and the tours are only available until the temple is dedicated. After that, no non- Mormans may enter. This was a very interesting project, and I would recommend that any time this opportunity occurs in the future, that the chapter take advantage of it. The temple was very impressive, and there was no overt effort at conversion or recruitment by the Mormans, so no one was uncomfortable. I was very impressed. 10. GIVE SPECIFIC AND MEASURABLE RESULTS FOR EACH GOAL ESTABLISHED. DESCRIBE THE IMPACT OF THIS PROJECT ON THE CHAPTER, INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS, AND THE COMMUNITY. Goal Results: A. To have 8 Jaycees participate in the project. -- This goal was met. 9 Jaycees toured the Temple. B. To have 2 prospective Jaycees participate in the project. -- This goal was not met. C. To run the project at no cost to the chapter. -- This goal was met. Project Impact: This project involved 9 Jaycees, which is 17% of our chapter, and 0 non-Jaycees. Benefit to the Individual: The individual learns a little bit about a different religion, and hopefully this will make him or her a more open-minded individual. Many people have been taught that all religions other than their own are heathen and do not believe in God. Hopefully this project will make someone realize that many religions worship God, just in different ways. Benefit to the Chapter: The chapter benefits by having more members who are Spiritually aware and open minded. This helps members learn to cope with each other’s differences and learn to get along despite them. Benefit to the Community: The community benefits because more people understand a little of the Morman faith, and will not spread rumours or lies out of ignorance. This increases understanding among people in the community and makes life a little better for people of all religions. West St. Louis County Jaycees - Chairman’s Planning Guide Page 1
